ROUTINES

There’s something about the changing of the seasons that makes us feel as though we need to reinvent ourselves. Summer arrives, and suddenly we’re encouraged to become a new version of who we are. But I don’t believe a new season requires a new identity.
Instead, I like to use seasonal transitions as an opportunity for reflection. What worked well last season? What didn’t? What habits supported me, and which ones no longer serve me? Rather than completely starting over, I prefer to make small adjustments that allow my routines to evolve alongside my life.
Consistency is one of the foundations of slow living. The more consistently we practice something, the more natural and effective it becomes. Routines aren’t meant to stay the same forever—they’re meant to grow with us.
This summer marks a particularly significant season of change for me. After the loss of my beloved cat, Landrey, navigating unemployment, and facing ongoing health challenges, I’ve found myself searching for stability in unfamiliar circumstances. Through it all, my morning routine has remained a grounding force. It has evolved to meet me where I am, and today I want to share the gentle rhythm that has been carrying me through this season.
My Soft Summer Morning Routine
Morning Rise
One of the first things I do each morning is open the curtains and let the sunlight fill my home. Natural light has a way of instantly making a space feel more inviting. Everything seems brighter, calmer, and somehow a little more manageable.
As a mother to a nine-month-old daughter who attends daycare, I treasure the quiet moments before the day fully begins. I like to use this time to prepare for the morning ahead while the house is still peaceful. Once my daughter is dressed, fed, and happily headed off to daycare with her dad, I feel like my own morning can truly begin.
Breakfast and Tea
For most of my life, I was never much of a breakfast person. It wasn’t that I disliked breakfast foods—I simply wasn’t hungry in the mornings. It often took until lunchtime for my appetite to appear.
Recently, with the guidance of my dietitian, I’ve worked on creating a more balanced morning routine that includes breakfast. As it turns out, she was right: once eating breakfast became a habit, my body adapted. Now I wake up feeling genuinely hungry.
Lately, I’ve been enjoying overnight oats packed with protein, fiber, and fresh fruit. They’re simple to prepare, nourishing, and perfect for busy mornings. (Overnight Oat Jars)
I’m also not a coffee drinker, so I usually start my day with warm lemon water or a cup of herbal tea in a cute mug. The warmth feels comforting, and it’s a gentle way to ease into the day.
Journaling & Spirituality
Our mental and physical well-being are deeply connected. The way we begin our mornings often sets the tone for the rest of the day, which is why I intentionally create space for reflection.
Most mornings, I sit on the back porch with my dogs while I enjoy breakfast and tea. During this time, I journal using The 5 Minute Journal, which has become one of my favorite tools for curating gratitude and mindfulness.
Some days my journaling consists of gratitude lists. Other days it’s a brain dump, goal-setting session, or simply a place to process my thoughts. No matter the format, taking a few moments to write helps me organize my mind and create a sense of calm before the day begins.
After journaling, I spend time nurturing my spirituality. For me, this might involve quiet reflection, reading, or studying spiritual topics. For others, it could look like meditation, breathwork, or simply sitting outside and being present.
Gentle Movement
Movement has become one of the most powerful forms of self-care in my life.
Each morning, I take my dog for at least a 30-minute walk. During that time, I often listen to a podcast focused on spirituality, personal growth, or slow living. Walking has become a non-negotiable part of my routine because of how much better it makes me feel—both physically and mentally.
Along with a good pair of walking shoes and my headphones, I never leave for my walk with out a water bottle. It's a small habit, but making hydration a priority helps me feel more energized throughout the day.
The beauty of walking is its simplicity. It doesn’t require expensive equipment or a gym membership, and it’s accessible to most people. Yet its impact can be profound.
What began as a habit I hoped to build has become one of my favorite parts of the day
Resetting the Home
When I return from my walk, I spend some time resetting the house.
This usually means unloading the dishwasher, starting a load of laundry/clearing out laundry baskets, and checking off a few daily chores. My boyfriend and I both have ADHD, so maintaining a chore chart has been incredibly helpful for keeping our household running smoothly.
I typically dedicate about an hour to tidying before transitioning into work mode. Taking care of these small tasks early helps clear mental clutter and minimizes distractions later in the day.
A tidy environment creates a calmer workspace, and I’ve noticed a significant difference in my focus when I take the time to reset my surroundings first.
A Gentle Work Day
By the time I sit down to work, I’ve already nourished my body, cared for my mind, moved my body, and reset my home.
As a result, my workdays tend to feel smoother and more intentional. I experience less brain fog, greater focus, and a stronger sense of direction. Instead of feeling like I’m immediately reacting to the day, I feel prepared to move through it thoughtfully.
Slow living isn’t about creating a perfect morning routine or completely transforming your life overnight. It’s about finding small practices that support your well-being and help you experience your days more fully.
Conclusion
If there’s one thing this season has taught me, it’s that routines don’t need to be complicated to be meaningful. The most impactful habits are often the simplest ones: opening the curtains, enjoying a nourishing breakfast, taking a walk, writing down your thoughts, or creating a peaceful environment around you.
As summer unfolds, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on your own daily rhythms. Ask yourself: How can I make my everyday life feel a little softer, a little calmer, and a little more supportive?
You don’t need to become a completely different person this season. Sometimes, all you need is a routine that evolves alongside you and gently supports the person you’re already becoming.
